KEMO CHAM

  • Kemo Cham is a journalist practicing for the past seven years, in both print and online. He holds certificates in Basic Journalism and Ethics, Newsroom Management and Business Journalism from the Commonwealth Press Union Media Trust (CPU Media Trust), London, UK.
  • Cham, prior to his journalism career, did a four year degree program in Biology and Agriculture at the University of the Gambia, where he was involved in student activism serving as president of the University of the Gambia Students Union and the National Union of Gambian Students concurrently. He began his journalism career there, before joining the Banjul based Today Newspaper in April 2007. He later joined the Daily Observer ( www.observer.gm), where he rose through the ranks to become editor-in-chief. Cham has previously served as media representative for Global Unification International, Gambia Chapter; and also as media representative for an NGO-CSO anti-tobacco alliance.
  • He is currently an editor of Gambia focused online publications - www.jollofnews.com. Between 2010 and 2011, the Gambian journalist lived and reported in Dakar, Senegal, and then Bamako in Mali, for online publications, www.africanews.com, www.africabusiness.com, and www.shoutafrica.com. 
  •  In Bamako, Cham also volunteered at the office of the West Africa Journalist Association - Capacity Building Project. Presently, he is the Sierra Leone correspondent for the Nairobi based Nation Media Group. He is based in Freetown. He writes on a host of issues, with a little focus on development, science and human rights issues. Locally, Cham has briefly edited the Financial Times newspaper, and he is currently one of the editors of Sierra Leone’s only arts and entertainment news publication, www.salonejamboree.com.
  • He is a registered member of both the Gambia Press Union (GPU) and the Sierra Leone Association of Journalist (SLAJ). The Gambian journalist also blogs at: www.jollofbantabaa.blogspot.com , www.banjulpost.blogspot.com.
